This coin has been struck in .925 sterling silver to proof quality and it celebrates the life of Jonathan Swift by featuring one of his most famous works, Gulliver’s Travels. The design of the coin is by Polish numismatic artist, Sebastian Mikolajczak. This is his first coin design for Ireland, it is based on micro, and macro scale contrasts. The giant Gulliver stands on an opened book representing Gulliver’s Travels, as a micro-scale ship sails across the pages.
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Irish satirist and essayist most famous for the works Gulliver’s Travels and a Modest Proposal both for which focused on a common theme of injustices in society. He also served as Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and was laid to rest there when he died in 1745.
